Chapter 12

"Timothy, come and talk with us in the kitchen," Mrs. Fuller said as she stood there with Magnolia and Mary Lou behind her.

Timothy looked a little surprised. "Don't you want to wait for Dat to come home?"

"That won't be necessary. I'm sure he'll go along with any decisions that I might make."

"Of course." They all sat around one end of the kitchen table.

Timothy cleared his throat. "I've come to ask you if I can come home."

Ivy’s eyebrows arched high, causing deep creases in her forehead. "You want to come home and live under this roof?"

"That's right."

"What about Taylor?" Mary Lou asked.

"I'm tired. I'm tired of struggling to try to make things work. I realized that I’ve been running away from Gott and He's the one who can fix up the mistakes I've made and make them right. I am throwing myself on Gott's mercy and asking Him to take me back, and I have a strong feeling that if I get my life right and Taylor sees that, she will join me."

"And join the community?" Ivy asked.

"Of course, join the community."

His mother looked at him. "Do you … Have you talked about this with her?"

"We’ve had many long conversations about lots of things and about Gott. I'm pretty positive she might join us."

Mary Lou listened. 'Pretty positive' that she ‘might’ didn’t sound that positive at all.

"If you want to come back into this haus and turn your life over to Gott, I'm not going to stand in your way."

"Really?" Timothy couldn’t keep the smile from his face. "Denke, Mamm." That meant he no longer had to pay that ridiculously high rent, and the quicker he paid off his debts, the quicker he could create a proper life for his family.

"That's wonderful, Timothy. And would you join your brothers at the Fullers' Joinery factory again?" Magnolia asked.

"They said when I left they’d take me back. I've got two jobs at the moment, so I would have to see which pays me the most. I have quite a few things I have to pay off."

His mother shook her head. "You've also got debts?"

"I have. It was the cars mostly."

Mrs. Fuller shook her head again. “At least you're trying to turn your life around."

"I am, I have to change something. I realize that. In any case, if anything's gonna change I realize it starts with me. In a way, I wish I’d never gone on rumspringa, but then again it's made me grow up."

"And you also wouldn't have met Taylor if you hadn't gone," Magnolia said.

He looked directly at his mother's expression, and he knew that her mother was thinking it would've been a good thing if he had never met Tayler. His mother’s opinion would change once she got to know Taylor.

"Would you meet her, Mamm? Maybe have her to dinner? Meet your grand dochder?"

"One step at a time, Timothy. Let's just get you back into the community. If you're serious, you’ll get baptized."

Timothy gulped. He was put on the spot.
